**I hope you enjoy the pictures above. We did a fun lesson with the book, Each Kindness. It tells the story of a little girl who waits too late to show kindness to a new student and only after the student moves does she realize the effect of her unkind words and her inability to make things right. Each pair poured soy sauce or some other liquid onto a napkin or in a cup to represent unkind words and we discussed how once they are out, like the soy sauce, they cannot be put back in.
We also did some fun science experiments in class last week with light and sound.
Math Workshop: We will review units 9 and 10 and take the Unit 9/10 test. We will then spend a few days reviewing and learning about properties of squares and rectangles, as well as triangles. We will classify triangles as acute, obtuse, right, scalene, equilateral, etc.
Writing Workshop: Next week we will review the overall guidelines and expectations of expository writing by dissecting a prompt and looking at former student writing. Students will also review many of the concepts learned that will help enhance their writing (using similes, flip the subject, word referents, etc) and students will write to a prompt.
Grammar: We will review irregular verbs and subject verb agreement next week as well as frequently confused words like you’re/your and there/their/they’re.
Reading/Daily 5: We’ll wrap up our work with similes and metaphors and then learn about idioms. We’ll discuss when and why they’re found in literature (and daily life) and how to interpret them. We will create a class idioms book. The class is loving our new read aloud, Out of my Mind.
Social Studies: We move into Texas Studies Weekly, week 12 next week and learn about how the Spanish started colonizing what is present day Texas and how that affected the Native American’s way of life. We’ll learn about the missions they built in Texas and their purpose.
Science/IB: Next week we learn about conductors and insulators. We’ll learn how electricity flows through a closed path, as well as what items make good insulators and conductors. Students will study circuits and decide why electricity is not flowing through and tell how to fix the circuit. The students have designed their solar ovens and will begin building them next week.
