Hello Parents,
I hope this blog update finds you well. We have been very busy this week with International Festival. The class worked so hard on brainstorming, sketching, and designing their banner. In fact, we had to start over on Thursday after our first attempt did not turn out as planned. As you can see above their work paid off and the banner looked wonderful. We also had two wonderful presentations this week. Alyssa Webb spoke to the class about Israel and Karen Lawson (Troy's mom) spoke about Germany. She even brought gummi bears! The students loved both presentations and the students were enthralled. Thank you so much for donating your time! I hope to see each of you at the International Festival later today.

Writing- In writing this week we are choosing our "seed." AKA- the story we will eventuually publish. We look closely at our entries and choose a seed that holds true meaning to our lives and who we are.
Reading- In reading we continue to read Shiloh and discuss the themes throughout (honesty, making tough choices, fairness). This week we also focus on context clues. This is an extremely important tool for good readers to have in their "toolbox." Without knowing how to properly use context clues, I find students skipping over words they don't know and losing meaning in the book. The students also continue to meet weekly with their reading groups.
Math- In math this week we begin Unit 4 on decimals. Students will learn to read, write, order, and compare decimals to the hundredths. This is also a very important math skill for them to master.
Social Studies- This week in Social Studies we read briefly about the Mayans, Incas, adn the Aztecs. Students will do some Mayan math and will even be given the opportunity to create an "Incan Suspension Bridge" at home and present it to the class for extra credit.
Science- In Science we continue to study matter and its properties. This week we focus on mass, volume, and buoyancy.
Our room does have 2 needs at the moment. We are mysteriously running low on Expo Dry Erase markers. We think someone is eating them- just kidding. Also, we, more specifically I, am in need of Sharpie markers that are made to write on chart paper. They are not regular Sharpie permanent markers. They are made by Sharpie but say Made for post its or charts, etc. Just a thought in case you are interested in getting either of these. Thank you again for all you do. Jennifer Heemer
