Hello Parents, we've had a great week! The kids had a blast in science lab yesterday, making siphons. We also had lots of fun becoming archaeologists today and "excavating" a cookie for artifacts. See pictures below! I hope to see many of you at Fall Community Night tomorrow night. Have a great weekend!
Math Workshop: Next week we start Unit 3 and learn several different ways to multiply. Students will be taught partial products, area model, and traditional methods of multiplying. It is imperative that your child knows his/her multiplication facts! They will struggle with this unit if they do not know their facts well. Please help your child by using flashcards or simply calling out their multiplication facts. Each child also has a set of fact triangles they can use to study.
Writing Workshop: Next week we look at visualizing and elaborating. Students will all read the same page in a novel, and based off of the author’s specific details and elaboration, they will draw what they visualize. It’s always fun to compare! We will also learn about critical story elements- which elements in our story are critical and need to be elaborated? We will also go over questions to ask ourselves to help us elaborate. We continue conferencing daily with our your children.
Grammar: We continue learning about adjectives next week. We will review comparative and superlative, as well as common and proper adjectives.
Daily 5/Reading: Next week we will review text to self and text to text and world connections. It’s important for students to understand which type of questions they should be asking themselves in order to make deep, thoughtful connections instead of surface, general connections. We will also learn about theme and discover how one or more themes are present in every book we read. Students will get in groups and read a picture book to determine its theme. At the end of the week, students will take a cumulative test on the reading concepts learned thus far- genre, point of view, story elements, author’s purpose, theme, etc.
Science/IB Unit of Inquiry: Next week we will learn all about natural resources as well as renewable and nonrenewable resources. We will do lots of readings, anchor charts, discussions, and watch a couple of videos in order to build on this knowledge.
Social Studies: Students loved being archaeologists this week and “excavating” their cookies. Next week, we begin week 5 in Texas Studies Weekly, where students learn about how people adapted to their environments, why so many led a nomadic lifestyle, and how it influenced their culture. We’ll read in our weekly newspaper as well as do a fun online hunt for finding and processing coprolites You’ll have to ask your child about that one!
