Hello Parents,
I hope you enjoyed seeing the pictures from the Fun Run! We had a great time and loved all of our rewards. My favorites were definitely the class dance party and no homework! :)
Math Workshop: We will continue learning long division and practicing daily in class. Next week, we’ll teach another method for solving division, called partial quotients. We will also learn how to interpret remainders in a word problem. The options are: ignore the remainder (left over things that cannot be shared), report as a fraction (things that can be shared, i.e., food), and round up (traveling in vans and you need one extra van to transport everyone). Those are just examples, however, the goal is for students to read a word problem and be able to interpret what needs to be done with the remainder. We will then review and take the end of unit test.
Writing Workshop: Next week we will look at ways to brainstorm for a given topic or prompt, and then how to organize that brainstorming into main ideas. We will also look at creating main ideas that are broad enough to write about, yet distinct enough not to overlap each other. We will do lots of practice in class and even send a little bit home for homework. J
Grammar: We will review the skills taught for the past couple of weeks- using conjunctions to make compound sentences, sentence fragments and run-ons, and subjects and predicates.
Reading/Daily 5: We will learn about context clues and how to use them to find the meaning of difficult or new words when reading. Students will learn to read around the word in order to find the meaning of the word by noting synonyms, antonyms, actual definition given, or example given. The class is loving our read aloud, The Watson's go to Birmingham. They beg and beg for me to read it. Each book club has also completed book club projects and chosen their next book to read.
Science: We will continue by wrapping up our lessons on mixtures and solutions.
Social Studies: We are loving learning about government and how it’s set up in our country, especially the three branches and how bills become laws. Next week we will compare the structure of our federal government to the structure of our state government. We will also discuss rights vs. responsibilities and what it means to be a good citizen. **Our class will be doing a really fun project we have our own mock government and we practice "How a Bill becomes a Law." We will have a Presidential race, Legislators, and Supreme Court Justices. It's always a favorite of the students'.
Upcoming Dates:
November 16- 12:30 dismissal
November 22- Progress reports go home
November 23-25- No School- Thanksgiving Break
November 30- Picture retakes
