We have had a great first week of school and I've had so much fun getting to know your children. Please read below for the latest curriculum information and important upcoming dates.
**We are in need of Lysol or Clorox wipes for the classroom. We wipe our desks and door handles every Friday.
**I also need diapers, yes diapers, if you have a few to spare. I need 4 name brand (Luvs, Huggies, Pampers) and 4 off brand (Target, CVS, etc). We are conducting an experiment to practice using the scientific method which we are studying in science this week. Thanks in advance!
Math – We reviewed place value all week and next week we will begin by discussing properties in math in regards to addition and subtraction (associative, coummutative, etc). We will also review adding and subtracting mulit-digit numbers with regrouping (formally known as “trading” or “borrowing”). Regrouping is the term we will be using. We will also introduce bar models and review for the chapter 1 test. The test will be on Thursday or Friday.
Writing- We will spend all week generating ideas for writing. We call these “seed ideas,” small moments that have happened in our lives. We’ll read several stories to help jog our memories and get us thinking about the moments we’ve experienced in our lives with people, places, and objects we love.
Grammar: Our grammar focus is on nouns- singular and plural.
Reading- The students are thoroughly enjoying the class read aloud of The Tiger Rising for our first unit of inquiry. This week we will look at character traits vs. character emotions/feelings. We’ll discuss the difference between the two in regards to characters in the book and ourselves. Students will draw a self -portrait listing character traits that describe themselves. We will also discuss the difference between flat and round characters found in novels, specifically The Tiger Rising.
Social Studies: We are continuing to learn and review map skills. Students will read “What is Geography” and create a flipbook containing information on symbols, latitude/longitude, continents, compass directions, etc.
Science: In Science, we will learn about the scientific method. We will discuss what it is, why and how scientists use it, and its importance. Students will create a flipbook about the scientific method.
