So my favorite day of each school year is the day I get to prank your kiddos and it always aligns closely to April Fool’s, which is perfect.
So when the class returned from ancillary today they each found stacks of old worksheets on their desk. I then showed them an email from the administration (not really, I typed it up) and told them that ALL worksheets must be completed by 3pm today. Their faces were priceless. We even went into how we would tackle each sheet, etc. Then I showed a sheet with directions which include balling each piece of paper into a paperball and making as many paperballs as they could for the massive paperball fight we were about to have. LOL- it’s so much fun to watch their faces! As usual, somewhere in the second minute a cry of, “Everyone get Ms. Heemer!!” is yelled and I am attacked from all sides. I’ve attached one photo here, but the rest are on the blog. Enjoy! J
Math Workshop: Next week will review/learn about Financial Literacy. Students will review concepts like fixed and variable incomes and look at specific real-world situations and determine which expenses are fixed and which are variable. We will also look at various savings options (homes, banks, etc) and the positives and negatives of each. Students will budget a weekly allowance and learn about different financial institutions and their purposes ( banks, savings, lending, borrowing).
Writing Workshop: It’s National Poetry Month! We will be spending the month of April reviewing concepts about poetry that we learned in reading (stanzas, line breaks, rhyme, meter, etc) and apply them to writing poetry. Next week we will discuss all the things we know about poetry and realize that poetry can be about anything you want. However, you are saying a lot without writing a lot, so word choice and sensory images are important. Students will focus on writing free verse (non-rhyming) poems this week. We will go outside to observe nature so we can hone in on our senses to write strong poetry.
Reading/Daily 5: Students will review non-fiction text features as well as many of the text structures found in reading. These plans will be for two weeks, as they are in depth and they are vital to students’ understanding of the text they are reading. We will focus on cause/effect, sequence, comparing/contrasting, problem/solution, and descriptions (characteristics). Students will be exposed to a variety of text and will apply it to their learning. *They are loving our new class read aloud, The Fourteenth Goldfish.
Science: We are really enjoying learning about Earth’s fast and slow moving changes. Next week we will focus on two fast moving changes that shape Earth- earthquakes and volcanoes. Students will view a powerpoint and learn what earthquakes are, what causes them, how they are measured, where they commonly occur, and how they affect our Earth. Students will also learn the parts of a volcano and will read about and then illustrate how islands are formed from volcanoes.
Social Studies: Next week we will move into Week 21 of Texas Studies Weekly, where we learn about the Mexican-American War. Students will read and watch videos to connect to the learning.
Upcoming Dates
April 14- No School- Good Friday
April 18- Progress Reports
Have a great weekend,
Jennifer
