It's been a long and busy week. The Austin field trip seems like it was two weeks ago! I had such a great time and I hope your child did as well. Thank you to all of the fabulous chaperones who joined us!
**I will be out for part of the day on Monday. I am a coach for Name That Book and our preliminary competition is on Monday- wish us luck!
We were finally able to test our solar ovens yesterday since it was so warm! I declared a three way tie between the top three group's- you can see the pictures of each group's solar oven as well as a picture of the winning group (with a few second place photo bombers in the back). :)
Math Workshop: We started reviewing time this week and next week we will learn about elapsed time and will teach strategies to help them solve word problems involving elapsed time. For the rest of the week, we will learn about graphs- frequency tables, tally chart, and dot plots. We will review how to read and interpret graphs and charts.
Writing Workshop: We continue practicing expanding our main ideas with authentic details. Next week the students will learn a strategy that involves labeling their writing with symbols to show how they’ve elaborated (Ex. draw a stick figure to show action or lips to show dialogue). This will help our visual learners see where they need more information. We will also do a whole class review of test taking strategies for editing/revising.
Reading/Daily 5: We will review drawing conclusions/making inferences next week. Students will make inferences in their book club novels as well as on STAAR practice reading assessments. We will finish our class read aloud, Crenshaw, next week.
Social Studies: We continue learning about the major battles of the Texas Revolution, including the Alamo. Students will also put several items in their Social Studies notebooks.
Science: Next week, students will take the Science summative for our latest unit of inquiry. They will apply the knowledge they have learned and show the ways a family can conserve and help protect our environment. We will also frontload for our new planner by discussing Alfred Wegener’s continental drift theory and Pangaea and watching videos that show the Earth 300 million years ago.
Upcoming Dates:
