Well, we survived our first week back from Spring break! We were extremely busy. The students studied bar graphs and surveys in math, so each student surveyed about 40 students on a topic of their choice. Then they used Microsoft Powerpoint to put their information into a color bar graph. We also used Microsoft Publisher this week to publish the travel articles they wrote in writing. They look wonderful and they've downloaded fabulous images to include on their article.
Please remember that we are going on our field trip to HMNS on Wednesday. All students MUST bring a lunch from home. There will be no sack lunches provided from the cafeteria. We are eating outside at the museum and students must bring their own lunch from home.
We have started switching classes daily at 9:30 am for math support. Each student goes to an assigned teacher based on their math benchmark scores. Our goal is to increase performance for all students. They are really enjoying the chance to visit other classrooms.
On a side note- I am still having about 5 students every Friday with either no reading log at all or an unsigned reading log. It is vital that the students are reading a minimum of 30 minutes a night (3 times during the school week). Please check with your child nightly to sign the log and ensure they are reading a chapter book at their level. When students do not have their log on Friday, they must sit out and read at recess to make up for the time they did not read during the week. Thank you for your help with this!
Also, I will be sending home each child's math and reading benchmark so that you can look over the material. They have corrected any questions they missed, but I thought you might enjoy seeing what kind of material is on the test.
Content Areas
Math- In math next week, we move into 3-D shapes, transformations, and symmetric/congruent figures. We will do lots of activities to support these areas.
Reading- In reading we continue our lessons on making inferences. Thanks for sending in the shopping receipts. I think we have all we need now! We will also finish Indian in the Cupboard this week and students will take a test on the novel.
Writing- In writing we visit another aspect of magazine and newspaper articles- FOOD! We will look at a variety of ways information about food is presented in magazines and newspapers. I will even bring in some food for the students to taste test!
Social Studies- We wrap up our unit on the Texas Revolution and play out the different battle scenes.
Science- In science we are going to look at alternative forms of energy. Students will choose one that interests them the most and will research it. The will use google aps to create a presentation about the alternative energy source they researched.
