Yikes! I can't believe that Monday will be May 2nd. Time really is flying.
First of all, I want to say congratulations to Joseph Donowho and the rest of the Odyssey of the Mind team! They are heading to world competition Memorial Day weekend! Good luck!
I also want to thank you for sending notes of encouragement for your child before TAKS. They were thrilled to get the letters and had so much fun reading them and sharing them with their friends. The students also wrote letters to each other and they enjoyed receiving those as well. The class worked SO hard on TAKS and I know they are happy to put it behind them, as we all are! Now we move on to Stanford...
On that note, next week we will do lots of preparation for Stanford testing. Stanford testing takes place May 9-12th.
We started our planner on Greek Mythology on Thursday and the students are absolutely loving it. I am too! We have each created mythology journals and already have about 7 pages filled so far. We are having a great time reading the myths, discussing the Gods/Goddesses and studying the family tree. If anyone would like to order D'aulaires' Book of Greek Myths, you can still do so. It was in the March book order, but I can order it again through Scholastic. The cost is $18 and you can make a check out to Scholastic or you can send cash. This is completely optional, but many of the students dive each day to be the first to grab that book, so I thought I'd offer it again.
Next week with our planner, each student will pair with a friend and choose the God or Goddess of their choice. They will then create small posters depicting their God/Goddess, their symbol/s, information about that person, their major myth and any other interesting information they wish to share. They will present these to the class. We will also begin a technology project where the students will use Photo Story 3 to create digital stories. We are in the early planning stages with this project, but I have done it in years past and the students always love it!
We are also meeting every Wednesday with Lizz Spencer (an art teacher) and she is helping us with projects. Last week each student received grid paper and designed a home for themselves in Pompeii- 70AD. They had so much fun working on it. Next week, she will show the class how to create clay friezes. T
